“As tho’ to breathe were life…” Tennyson understood Ego and Heart. Ego accepts the status quo, just happy to exist. Just existing. Some existence.
The series that I have published over the last eight days lays out ten steps that I believe are experiential stages in the awakening of the human soul. They don’t necessarily happen in order; they don’t necessarily happen over similar amounts of time. In fact, others call some of these Steps by other names. As long as people awaken to Self, it doesn’t matter. I hope my work helps others to discover that Self, life Purpose, and in general, a full, significant, fun, and joyful life. I have called the basis and effects of our awakening the Grand Unified Theory of Humanity (G.U.T.H.) because it provides explanation for human experience and behaviors, roots for human existence, and traces us all back to the same essence: Spirit. When we arrive here with body, mind, and soul, we also come equipped with two operating systems, to use the computer analogy: Ego and Heart. Ego operates as the default setting; Heart, though, we must awaken to and install consciously, i.e., make a choice. And that choice is our awakening. Heart supplies us with a portion of eternal Spirit, a part of Spirit desirous of knowing the richness, thrill, amazement, and wonder of a mortal existence. Sometimes, though, we feel negative emotions; we experience hurt or hurt others. Why, when and if Life offers such amazement, do we see and experience discord, hurt, sorrow, destruction, death, and the whole litany of personal distress and illnesses and societal injustices? The answers to that are many and complex, but to me negative experiences devolve their existence to Ego. We come equipped with Ego because it isolates and protects us from infinitely perceived dangers. We come programmed with that Ego as our initial operating system because we begin as fragile infants, and we need it. Ego is part of an animal necessity for us, working like instinct in a very, well, egocentric way, but it is one that causes children to draw back from harm and pull sensory stimulators into their range of experience. Children, though, as they quickly come to more complex thought, understand another operating system exists in them, one that enables them to see life differently; however, Ego and an ego-driven society strive to keep children from installing that Heart Operating System, and those efforts are very effective. This is why as we grow into adulthood we need an awakening. When we don’t choose as a child, which most of us do not, then we require an epiphany to hear and respond to Heart within us, to acknowledge Heart, accept and love Heart, our core Self. We, then, make a conscious decision to uninstall Ego and install Heart. Humans not only come equipped with these two diverse operating systems but also with other facets, wonderful facets, of our Being: mind, soul, and body. Since we are complex creatures, our awakening isn’t as simplistic as a computer uninstall of Ego and installation of Heart. We engage in a journey and work through the process, experiencing what I have described in the 10 Steps. The point when we “get it” becomes the epiphany, the awakening. That’s when we first know fellowship with our Heart, a fellowship that allows us entrance into the understanding of G.U.T.H., that principle unifying the rationale and mysteries of humanity. Of course, it is a unified theory because it also shows that when people don’t awaken, their experiences are explained. More to come tomorrow. For tonight — may the blessing of awakening to your own Heart be yours.
